Day 232 of 2026- The Friend Who Wants You to Win

 Hi Friends,

I came across an idea today, often associated with Aristotle, and honestly, we could all use a lot more of it: the best friend is someone who wants good things for you simply for your own sake, not because of what they might receive in return.

It is such a simple idea, but it puts a lot of friendships into perspective when you really sit with it.

So often, people want good things for you as long as your success doesn't inconvenience them, change the relationship, or make them question something about their own lives. They may support you as long as they still benefit from your choices or feel comfortable with where you are going.

But a real friend wants you to win even when there is nothing in it for them.

They are happy when you receive the opportunity, reach the goal, find the relationship, or make the change you have been hoping for. Your success doesn't make them feel smaller, and your happiness doesn't feel like a threat to them.

They do not need to bring the conversation back to themselves. They can simply say, “I am happy for you,” and truly mean it.

That kind of friendship is rare, and honestly, it is worth noticing who in your life actually shows up that way.

Who celebrates you without competing with you?

Who encourages you when you begin doubting yourself?

Who tells you the truth because they care about you, not because they want to hurt you?

Who remains present during both the exciting moments and the difficult ones?

A true friend does not have to agree with every decision you make. Sometimes a good friend will challenge you, ask you an uncomfortable question, or tell you something you may not want to hear. The difference is in the intention behind it. They are not trying to control you or hold you back. They genuinely want what is best for you.

Friendship should not feel like keeping score. It shouldn't be based only on who called last, who paid for lunch, who got more attention, or who seems to be doing better in life.

There will be seasons when one person needs more support than the other. There will be times when life gets busy, and you do not speak as often. But underneath it all, there should still be care, trust, and a sincere desire to see each other do well.

It is also worth asking ourselves whether we are that kind of friend.

Can we celebrate someone else’s success without comparing it to our own lives? Can we support a friend’s growth even when it takes them in a different direction? Can we be genuinely happy for someone without asking what their happiness means for us?

If you have someone in your corner who wants good things for you simply because they care about you, appreciate that person today. Send a message, make a call, or let them know how much their friendship means to you.

And if you are that friend for someone else, continue showing up with a sincere heart.

The best friendships remind us that another person’s light does not take away from our own. There is room for all of us to grow, succeed, and be happy.

Wishing you peace and happiness from my heart to yours!

Peace,

Monita
