The Self-Checkout Cashier and Me: A Friendship Built on “Would You Like to Donate?”

 Day 295 of 2026

Hi Friends,

The same cashier is always monitoring the self-checkout lines whenever I go. You would think we would be friends by now, given the number of times we’ve said the same thing to each other: “Hi, how are you?”

He asks, “Is everything good?”

I say yes.

And then, like clockwork, he walks back to his stand, picks up his little booklet, and comes over to ask, “Would you like to donate today?”

Here’s the thing: I had already donated, so today my answer was a polite “No, thank you.” He smiled, nodded, and went right back to his post. No pressure, no awkwardness, just a friendly exchange between two people who clearly see each other far more often than either of us would admit.

I’ll be honest, it’s funny. We have the whole routine down like a well-rehearsed play. Greeting, check-in, booklet, donation question, polite decline, exit stage left. If we ever skipped a step, I think we’d both be a little thrown off.

But it’s also a small gesture that genuinely makes my day. In a world where so many of us are staring at screens, scanning our own groceries and barely looking up, it’s nice to be noticed. It’s nice to be asked how you’re doing, even if the conversation follows the same script every time.

And let’s be real: I am one person who finds myself at the grocery store constantly. A forgotten ingredient here, a “quick” trip there. So I’ve had plenty of chances to perfect this little ritual with my self-checkout buddy.

So to the cashier who always asks: thank you. You may not know it, but those thirty seconds of friendly small talk are often the brightest part of my errand run. Next time, I might even say yes to the booklet.

Until then, see you at the self-checkout. I’ll be the one saying, “Hi, how are you?”

Wishing you peace and happiness from my heart to yours!

Peace

Monita
